Mika and Rookie, inseparable brothers

Discover the wonderful story of two Husky brothers who spent several months at the shelter:
“Mika and Rookie, 2 brothers who lived in a house with their mother were abandoned at the shelter because they had argued together. The reason for this argument is unknown.
When they arrived, they were in 2 separate enclosures, each prostrated at the back of the cage, terrified. It was mid-April in full lockdown with very little staff. It took me 10 days before I managed to get them outside! They showed no signs of aggression but they were very elusive. It took a few more days for them to let me touch them and for them to gain confidence.
Question marks were flying through my head, but what are we going to do with you!
Very close and dependent on each other, I decided to put them in the same cage. They then calmed down, especially Rookie. With patience and time, I was able to introduce a few people into their circle to take them out. Mika turned out to be the most clingy and Rookie the most playful. Long sessions of brushing and cuddling followed. A rare attachment was created.
We posted them in rescue so that they would leave together. The weeks went by but no one came forward. In speaking with the adoption team, we said to ourselves that maybe we would try to have them adopted separately even if it broke our hearts. So they were neutered and they did it like champions. We noticed that when they were with a trusted person that they knew, everything went better.
Finally a new rescue specializing in huskies came forward to take the 2! How lucky! But the catch…the shelter is in Vancouver.
So the 2 little ones had to take the plane. A long organization followed with the help of OLC and a generous donation from Proanima for the plane tickets. It took 1 month for them to finally leave! They left on August 26 after 4 months at the shelter.
They arrived at the shelter owner’s house with several other dogs! That same evening, we saw in the photos Rookie giving kisses to the gentleman and the 2 surrounded by the other huskies in the house. What a relief to finally see them in a home that will go at their pace.
These are two very special dogs who were not at all suited to shelter life and despite everything, the whole team worked hard to make their lives better! ”
