Canola and Maximus, two extraordinary destinies

By Dorothée Pâris Pasturel • 10 December 2024

Canola, the scent of trauma

In June, Nancy, our counsellor, received a call from a couple from Longueuil who had found a little cat lying in front of their house. They said she looked like she had fallen out of a swimming pool because her fur was all wet. Since she wasn’t moving, they put clothes on her to keep her warm.
When Nancy arrives, she gives first aid because the flea has a low temperature. Once in her truck, her gloves and mask removed, Nancy notices the strong smell of vegetable oil emanating from the cat. So it is not water she is covered in, but OIL !
Back at the shelter, Nancy puts her in a condo with a hot water bottle to warm her up because the kitty is still cold and seems weak.

Canola – before

Afterwards, our medical team took over to clean her, give her care and note, after X-rays, that our friend even had oil in her lungs… which unfortunately caused pneumonia .

The cat is nicknamed Canola and will be under treatment for several weeks .

Canola – after

Canola quickly found her forever family and is perfectly happy in her new home!

Maximus, the perfect dog who comes back from far away.

Perhaps you saw Maximus’ story when he appeared on the show Refuge Animal this winter. This story begins in October 2019, following a report from neighbors who heard a dog in an unoccupied home.

Upon arrival, our mobile unit workers found a dog locked in a cage, abandoned and alone . A wound on his back and his extreme thinness gave us an idea of the mistreatment he had received. We didn’t know how long Maximus had been waiting in this cage, but it must have been several days…

Upon his arrival at the shelter, our medical team immediately made sure to treat his injuries and get him back on weight . The rest of the employees were tasked with helping him regain confidence in humans and ensuring his total well-being during his stay.

Maximus stayed at the shelter for several months before finding THE perfect family for him. You followed his story in Animal Refuge and we are happy to announce that the handsome coco found his forever family on March 19!

We are fortunate to receive regular news from Maximus and his family: ” My name is Maximus, I am two years old and I am the happiest dog with Sonya! I sleep cuddled up to her, I go for walks, I go to the park to run like crazy, I eat and, above all, I have endless love. »

Maximus and Canola are perfect examples of the importance of teamwork at Proanima. It is also thanks to you, donors and volunteers, that we are able to help all the other “Maximus” and “Canola” who come through the shelter doors.
