As veterinary costs continue to rise, it’s important for pet owners to be proactive in preventing medical issues. Here are some tips to help keep your pets healthy.

1. A balanced diet

Nutrition is the cornerstone of animal health. It is crucial to provide your pet with quality food, adapted to its species, age, weight and specific needs. A balanced diet strengthens the immune system and prevents nutritional deficiencies. Avoid fatty or sugary foods and favor products specially formulated for them.

Also be careful not to give them table food that could be toxic to them: chocolate, avocado, dairy products, grapes, candy, etc.

2. Regular exercise

Exercise is just as important for pets as it is for humans. It helps prevent obesity, strengthens muscles and bones, and improves cardiovascular health. For dogs, daily walks and play sessions are a must. Cats and small animals also benefit from stimulating activities like interactive toys, chew toys, or cat trees. Make sure your pet has plenty of space to move and explore.

3. Vaccines and antiparasitics

Vaccinations are essential to protect your pet against serious diseases such as rabies, leptospirosis or parvovirus. An annual booster is highly recommended. Also consider treating your pet against parasites such as fleas, ticks and worms.

4. Hygiene and Body Care

Maintaining good hygiene helps prevent infections and other health problems. Clean your dog’s ears regularly, especially if he has floppy ears. Dental care is also very important: brush your pet’s teeth or give him chews to reduce tartar and gum disease. Don’t forget to trim his nails to avoid injuries.

5. Safe and Stimulating Environment

A safe and stimulating environment contributes to your pet’s mental and physical health. Make sure your home is free of potential hazards like toxic products, sharp objects or small items that can be swallowed. Provide toys and activities to stimulate their minds and prevent boredom, which can lead to destructive behaviors or anxiety.

Common health problems in our animals:

  • Dog: ear infections, gastritis, allergic dermatitis, hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis, dental problems.
  • Cat: rhinotracheitis, cystitis, ear infections, periodontal disease, hyperthyroidism.
  • Rabbit: myxomatosis, pododermatitis, dental problems, respiratory infections, ear infections.

Finally, an annual check-up at the vet is highly recommended in order to prevent the appearance of health problems as much as possible. It is better to spend a little each year than to end up with a large unexpected expense and see your pet suffer. Prevention is the best medicine!
