How to reduce the ecological footprint of our animals
By Dorothée Pâris Pasturel • 10 December 2024
Just like humans, pets have a real impact on the environment. Here are some tips to help you reduce this ecological footprint as much as possible:
- Use organic food : Choose “eco-friendly” food brands. There are several today that indicate the organic label on their packaging. Pay attention to the origin and quality of the nutrients used.
- Switch to green grooming products : plant-based shampoos, bamboo toothbrushes, etc. Many companies are now moving towards healthy and natural products, now is the time to take advantage of it!
- Do the same for cleaners : use hot water and Marseille soap to clean your surfaces. Or white vinegar and baking soda. This will be less harmful, especially for your small animals.
- Choose toys made from recyclable materials or make them yourself from rope, string or fabric (and catnip!). Dig through your blue bin, you will find little treasures! Many tutorials are available on Youtube.
- Buy local and choose eco-responsible companies . This is the best way to encourage good practices!
- Buy in bulk : this avoids overconsumption of packaging and reduces the frequency of transport. And what’s more, you save money!
- Have a green thumb for your pets’ needs : pick up your dogs’ excrement using biodegradable bags (cardboard, newspaper, etc.). And choose a litter made from renewable raw materials, such as wood, corn, beet pulp, recycled paper or compost.
- Adopt from a shelter : it’s a truly eco-responsible gesture because instead of encouraging puppy or kitten mills, we contribute to the cause by saving animals in need. Shelters are full of abandoned animals waiting for a new home.
